Program Director: Michael Babich, MD
Accreditation: ACGME
Program Length: 3 years (PGY4-6)
Fellows per year: 4
We are a fully ACGME accredited gastroenterology and hepatology training program, offering a three-year clinical fellowship track. We recruit our fellowship trainees exclusively through the NRMP Match, accepting four new fellows each year. We offer an exceptional training experience, with our graduates performing tremendously well on the ABIM subspecialty exam.
Our unique curriculum allows fellows to meet all ACGME clinical requirements in their first two years. This allows us to work individually with each fellow to create a unique third-year curriculum specific to their career aspirations. Multiple elective opportunities are available, including nutrition, obesity medicine, addiction medicine, pediatric GI, radiology, pathology, and surgery, which serve to create a greater depth and breadth in the educational experience. Additionally, our fellows participate in focused rotations to train them in performing and interpreting capsule endoscopy, high-resolution esophageal and anorectal manometry, and in the provision of conscious sedation. Our unique senior fellow electives include “Introduction to Advanced Endoscopy”, providing fellows exposure to advanced endoscopic techniques in preparation for 4th year training positions, and “advanced GI Consults”, which provides fellows an opportunity to function as a junior faculty person, supervising the consults team, with focused training experiences in small group teaching, feedback, and supervision.
Allegheny General Hospital (AGH), our main training site, sponsors 20 residency and 23 fellowship programs, has an international reputation for excellence and innovation in education, research, and patient care. AGH is a national leader in cardiovascular, cancer, neuroscience, and orthopaedic and rehabilitation care, and offers a wide array of medical and surgical specialties including a Level 1 trauma center with aeromedical service (LifeFlight).
Our large teaching faculty contains a breadth and depth of specialty and subspecialty expertise, including many excellent Advanced Endoscopists, General and Transplant Hepatologist, IBD specialists, and neurogastroenterology.
Integration with a broad range of specialists and support services, including integrated medicine specialists, nutritionists and dieticians, bariatric and colorectal surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, lends to a training experience that is thorough and enlightened, and truly facilitates the competency of system-based practice. State-of-the-art diagnostic and endoscopic equipment, highly trained and specialized faculty, and a very active liver transplantation program all facilitate our goal of producing "cutting edge" gastroenterologists.
A comprehensive conference schedule incorporates numerous multi-specialty clinicopathology conferences, practice management, quality improvement, and patient safety series, in addition to core our curriculum series, Journal Club, Board Review, Morbidity and Mortality (M&M), and Research conferences with extensive fellow involvement, to help foster our fellows' clinical educations.
Excellence in ambulatory gastroenterology is achieved by incorporating a large number of hospital and community-based clinics, and participation in multiple subspecialty clinics.
A very active program of scholastic activity and clinical research ensures all our fellows complete their training as published authors, as well as thought-leading clinicians. Our graduates have pursued highly successful careers in both private and academic arenas, in all parts of the country.
