The Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program at AHN is proud to offer an Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR) pathway.
ESIR provides motivated and qualified residents the opportunity for an immersive interventional radiology (IR) experience between PGY2-5 years during DR residency. This then allows the ESIR resident to match to an advanced position within a two year independent IR residency.
ESIR at Allegheny Health Network (AHN) includes a minimum of 12 IR or IR-related rotations (vascular surgery, critical care, transplant, neurointerventional radiology etc.) within the 4 year DR residency. Additionally, the ESIR resident will be required to complete a 4 week rotation in the TICU/SICU. One resident per class will have the opportunity to apply for the ESIR pathway in September of their PGY3 year. Applicants will be selected for interview and acceptance based on IR skill set, academic excellence, leadership skills, research experience and character, regardless of race, sex, ethnicity or age.
As a Level 1 Trauma center and major regional transplant center AHN IR receives a large volume and breadth of cases performed in our IR section annually. Our service covers a wide range of pathology related to interventional oncology, peripheral vascular disease, hemodialysis access maintenance, hepatobiliary, complex venous access, urinary as well as US and CT guided oncologic interventions. Additionally, Allegheny General Hospital serves as one of the regions stroke centers of excellence and provides a unique resident experience in definitive intra-arterial stroke interventions.
