All medical students, except those that attend Drexel, must apply on VSLO. VSLO applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
VSLO applications, which open atAllegheny Health Network in February, are required for the EM Sub-I and allelectives including Toxicology, Ultrasound and EMS.
The Emergency Medicine 4-week clerkship at Allegheny General Hospital offers medical students an opportunity to train in a high acuity setting at a Level 1 Trauma Center. As a leading Stroke, STEMI, Transplant and ECMO center, AGH provides exposure to a diverse range of critical cases, allowing students to develop essential skills in rapid decision-making, patient stabilization, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
The EM clerkship includes the following experiences:
Your Clerkship grade will be based on your on-shift feedback cards, 10-minute case presentation and the SAEM exam administered at the end of your clerkship.
The Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Elective at Allegheny General Hospital offers medical students an opportunity to strengthen their ultrasound skills in a busy clinical environment. During shifts, students will practice ultrasound techniques and procedures alongside residents and if available the ultrasound fellow, gaining valuable real-time scanning experience. Additionally, the elective includes weekly ultrasound review sessions with the Ultrasound Director and dedicated didactic
opportunities to deepen understanding and proficiency. This immersive 4-week experience is designed to build confidence in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) and enhance clinical decision-making skills in emergency medicine.

The Emergency Medicine Toxicology Elective at Allegheny General Hospital provides medical students with an in-depth 4-week experience in the evaluation and management of patient’s with toxicologic emergencies. Students will have the opportunity to round with the toxicologist, actively participate in patient care by writing toxicology-focused histories and physicals (H&Ps) and progress notes and gain exposure to complex poisoning cases. Additionally, the elective features engaging lectures covering a broad range of toxicology topics, from common overdoses to rare toxic exposures, equipping students with essential knowledge for emergency medicine practice.

The Emergency Medical Services(EMS) Elective at Allegheny General Hospital offers medical students an exciting opportunity to gain experience in prehospital and critical care transport medicine. Students will participate in ride alongs with ground EMS services and critical care transport teams, including LifeFlight if desired, gaining firsthand exposure to prehospital emergency care. Additional
experiences include working in the EMS command center, engaging in
fellowship-led didactics, and learning from the EMS fellow during field
operations. This 2 or 4 electives provides a comprehensive look at the dynamic world of EMS and its vital role in emergency medicine.

Are you a medical student at LECOM, Duquesne or Drexel or currently rotating in the Pittsburgh area and interested in Emergency Medicine? We invite you to join the EM Interest Group at Allegheny General Hospital. We will be offering various workshops and meetings throughout the year to help strengthen your EM knowledge and skills throughout your medical school training.
Our interactive sessions will cover essential skills such as EKG interpretation, suturing, airway management, and trauma care.
Additionally, we will host various lectures, including topics such as EM as a specialty, how to excel during your EM Sub-I and how to navigate the Match successfully.
