Gender Based Medicine Track

The Gender Based Medicine Track (GBMT) was established in 2021 for residents who are interested in gaining a better understanding of gender specific healthcare needs affecting individuals throughout the gender spectrum.

The goal of the track is to offer residents the opportunity to have directed mentorship and longitudinal experiences in this area.

As part of the track, residents will have more in depth training in the following:

  • Women’s health knowledge across the lifespan including vaginitis, PCOS, family planning and contraception, postpartum care, menopause, genitourinary issues, and breast and cervical cancer screening
  • Men’s health knowledge including prostate cancer screening, erectile dysfunction, urinary incontinence, and STIs
  • LGBTQ+ health including differences in screening and gender affirming medicine
  • Procedural skills around pelvic exams, pap smears, IUD insertions, and Nexplanon insertions

In the GBMT you will:

  •  Be assigned a mentor in your area of interest to help guide you in clinical skills, research, and career counseling
  • Participate in monthly seminars on gender specific topics, and will teach one of these seminars each year
  • Participate in a one week elective each year where you will work in different clinical settings that focus on gender based medicine (women’s health, urology, obgyn, transgender medicine, areas of oncology, nutrition, endocrinology, and others)
  • Participate in gender based medicine research

Our GBMT is directed by Molly Fisher MD, MS, and includes core faculty. The faculty will help to arrange your schedule, organize didactics, and provide mentoring.

The GBMT curriculum meets the requirements of the ACGME for successful graduation from the Internal Medicine Residency Program.

The GBMT does not have its own NRMP match number. Instead, we select up to four residents each year who express an interest in and commitment to gender based medicine. When you are granted an interview, please let the program coordinator know about your interest in this track.
