Inpatient rehabilitation unit

Specialists at our 20-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit provide round-the-clock care for seriously injured patients. We develop customized exercise and treatment programs to help restore function following an accident, illness, surgery, or other life-changing event. You receive intensive physical, occupational, and/or speech-language therapy three hours per day, five days a week.

A physiatrist, a physician with advanced training in physical medicine and rehabilitation, leads your team of caregivers. Your team includes nurses with special training in rehabilitation, as well as social workers, nutritionists, and respiratory therapists. We develop a personalized plan that considers your unique needs and health goals.

The inpatient rehabilitation unit at Forbes Hospital features:

  • Convenience and comfort: We have private and semi-private rooms located on 7 South. Visitor parking is free.
  • Deep expertise: You receive care from specialists in orthopaedics, neurology, internal medicine, and psychiatry.

Physical therapy

Our physical therapists work to increase your flexibility and endurance, while improving strength, balance, and coordination through customized exercise and treatment programs. Our goal is to restore function and maximize your independence. We offer:

  • Pre-surgical preparation: Our therapists provide educational sessions so you and your caregivers know exactly what to expect after a planned surgical procedure, such as a joint replacement or heart surgery. This information ensures a smoother, faster recovery for you.
  • Inpatient physical therapy: Our physical therapists get you up and moving safely in the hospital after certain surgical procedures, such as a joint replacement. We also work with hospitalized patients recovering from a traumatic event, such as a car accident or stroke.

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapists help you maintain an independent lifestyle by making daily activities like dressing, grooming, bathing, and household tasks easier. These therapists can also assist with securing medical equipment to increase safety and improve your ability to manage everyday activities.

Outpatient Lymphedema therapy

Blockages in the lymphatic system can cause swelling and pain in the arms or legs. This condition, called lymphedema, can result from infection, trauma, injury, cancer, or cancer treatments. Our occupational therapists create an exercise program and use compression garments to reduce swelling and pain. We also offer complete decongestive therapy to improve lymph gland drainage.

Speech-language therapy

Our speech-language pathologists create individualized treatment plans to bolster communication, eating, swallowing, and cognition. We work with people affected by strokes, brain injuries, neurological diseases, swallowing disorders, and other medical conditions. We also offer post-operative laryngectomy speech therapy for people who undergo surgical removal of a cancerous larynx or voice box. Our speech-language pathologists teach you how to use and care for a voice prosthesis.

Home health services

Our home health services program, Healthcare@Home, provides extra help for people recovering at home. We offer in-home physical therapy and rehabilitation services, as well as help with daily activities such as bathing and grooming. We also provide skilled nursing care for chronic disease management.
