Application Information

Eligibility

Four positions will be offered in the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program on a competitive basis. To be eligible to be interviewed for one of our fellowship positions, the applicant must:

  1. Be involved in or a graduate of an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited Internal Medicine Residency Program; if a graduate, must have been actively practicing Internal Medicine within the last 3 years
  2. Participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), and submit a completed application online through the Electronic Residency Application Service® (ERAS®) system no later than July 31
  3. Achieve a three-digit score of at least 210 on either, or both, USMLE Step 2 and 3 exams (or a comparable COMLEX score) and have passed Step 2-CS
  4. Have at least 1 year of U.S. experience (in practice or training)
  5. Be Board-eligible, or Board-certified, in Internal Medicine if more than 1 year out from completion of an ACGME-accredited residency program
  6. Be a U.S. citizen, or maintain appropriate visa status (determination of eligibility of applicants as related to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) approvals of appropriate non-immigrant visa eligibility will be made based on ECFMG and Department of State (DOS) requirements for the J-1 visa).

H-1B visas will not be sponsored by the West Penn Allegheny Health System for fellowship training.

Documentation requirements

The following documents are required in order for candidates to be considered for an interview:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Personal Statement
  • Recent Photograph
  • Valid ECFMG Certificate (foreign medical graduates)
  • Green Card Status (if applicable)
  • USMLE Scores (M.D.'s): Steps 1 and 2; Step 3 (if available)
  • COMLEX Scores (D.O.'s): Levels 1, 2 and 3
  • Letters of Recommendation: 3, including letter from Program Director

PLEASE NOTE: Applications will not be considered complete unless all of the above-listed documents have been submitted electronically through ERAS.

Interview schedule

  • July - August: Our program downloads and reviews applications. Our program will extend invitations for an interview via email through the ERAS Post Office. All interview invitations will be sent no later than August 31.
  • October: Interviews will take place during half-day sessions through the month of October. Applicants will be offered a selection of four available days. Invited applicants will meet with core faculty members of gastroenterology and hepatology, spend time with current fellows and take a virtual tour of the facilities.

Gastroenterology match process

Once you have completed your interview day with our faculty, we hope you will strongly consider our program. The Gastroenterology Fellowship Program at Allegheny General Hospital participates in the Medical Specialties Matching Program (MSMP) for fellowship positions sponsored by the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
