AGH opened its doors on Pittsburgh’s North Side in 1885. Beginning the journey with 50 beds within two brick homes, it now is one of the country’s premiere health institutions with 594 licensed beds.

Allegheny General Hospital nursing structure

The Cardiovascular and Thoracic Institute: This Institute features CV Surgery ICU, Cardiac ICU, cardiac surgery telemetry, an advanced heart failure unit, Catheterization Lab, Electrophysiology Lab, and non-invasive cardiology service for patients in need of complex care including Mechanical Circulatory Support and cardiac transplantation.

Allegheny General Hospital also offers the following nursing units within these separate institutes:

The Joint and Spine Institute: nursing units for elective and traumatic orthopedic, joint and spine surgical patients

The Neurosciences Institute: Neuro ICU and Neurocranial unit serving complex brain surgery, neurointerventional and stroke patients

The Trauma Service: Trauma ICU and trauma / surgical unit for highly acute level 1 trauma patients

The General Surgical and Abdominal Transplant Service: surgical units for renal, liver and pancreas transplant patients as well as general surgical and urologic patients

The Medicine Institute: iMedical ICU, medical step down and medical telemetry units for patients with complex medical diagnoses requiring collaboration of multiple medicine subspecialties

The Perioperative Service: four surgical divisions; Orthopedics, General Surgery/ Trauma / Transplant, CVT and Neurosurgery as well as PACU, Ambulatory Care Center, Outpatient surgical center and GI lab

Emergency Services: emergency department and the observation unit for both complex patients who will be admitted and those who will have a short stay to determine their diagnosis
