About the program

Our Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program is based at Allegheny General Hospital.

Oral and maxillofacial surgery, as defined by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, is the specialty of dentistry which includes the diagnosis, surgical and adjunctive treatment of diseases, injuries and defects involving both the functional and aesthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial regions.

It is the goal of our Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program to provide the best possible learning environment, resources, instruction and clinical exposure necessary for each resident to acquire the broad and solid knowledge base and well-developed clinical skills necessary to practice the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgical specialty.

Toward meeting this goal, the program maintains four important objectives:

1. To educate specialists to a level of competency in the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery through systematic and comprehensive didactic and clinical training which will provide the foundation for the resident to attain proficiency in the specialty.
2. To educate specialists broadly in the basic sciences, medicine, and surgery through comprehensive didactic and clinical education, whereby the specialist will be competent to identify diseases and disorders for referral, teach on a faculty, engage in investigative research, and pursue additional post-graduate training.
3. To provide an opportunity for research and submission of a paper for publication.
4. To prepare for certification by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
5. To develop competent, ethical and compassionate practitioners who possess a broad-based world view of the health sciences; appreciate and respect their peers and colleagues in dentistry, medicine and surgery; strive continually for excellence in their profession; and commit to life-long learning.
6. To attract the highest quality of dental school graduates into the residency program.
