AHN Cardio-Oncology Clinic

Our cardio-oncology program treats people with cancer who are at risk of cardiotoxicity — a heart condition caused by cancer treatments, like radiation, chemo- and immunotherapy, hormone-based therapies, and other cancer treatments.

Part of the larger AHN Heart Disease Prevention Program, Cardio-Oncology Clinic specialists partner with oncologists at the AHN Cancer Institute to provide personalized cardiovascular care to cancer patients. Together, we help make sure your heart stays healthy before, during, and after receiving cancer treatments.

About our program

The AHN Cardio-Oncology Clinic monitors and treats patients who have an existing heart disease or are at risk of having heart disease prior to, during, and after receiving cancer treatments. Our team of specialists works closely with oncologists to provide a comprehensive treatment plan for your best care. An oncologist may refer you to our clinic while you receive treatment. If you’ve been diagnosed with cancer, ask your oncologist to see if you meet the cardio-oncology referral criteria through our programs.

Our Cardio-Oncology Clinic advises on how cancer treatments can be adjusted to help minimize the risk of treatment-related heart complications. Our team of expert-trained specialists uses the latest evidence and protocols, which includes blood tests for cardiac markers and imaging tests such as MRI, echocardiography with strain imaging, and nuclear MUGA scans to diagnose cardiac adverse effects early on. We coordinate our treatment plans with your oncologist to make sure you can continue safely with cancer treatment.

Our Cancer Institute also offers a Cancer Survivorship Program, which includes specialized care for long-term side effects from cancer treatments. By focusing on a patient's ongoing recovery, the program provides ongoing follow-ups and care for cardiotoxicity, as well as non-cardiology-related services like oncology rehabilitation. We're always testing the latest therapies that can help treat adverse cardiac side effects.

Cardio-Oncology Clinic testing and treatments

The Cardio-Oncology Clinic offers a number of services for patients diagnosed with cancer, including:

  • Treating heart complications that may develop during cancer therapy, such as hypertension, arrhythmia, decline in heart function, and chest pain.
  • Providing lifestyle guidance, such as proper exercise and eating habits, to patients with an existing heart condition or those who are at high risk for developing heart disease before they begin their cancer treatment.
  • Evaluating patients when they start cancer treatment to help prevent, monitor, and treat heart conditions.
  • Routinely monitoring patients currently receiving cancer treatments for early detection of heart abnormalities with guideline-directed regular image and blood tests.
  • Screening for heart complications after patients complete cancer treatment.
  • Providing tips and guidance for how to live a healthy life after cancer therapy is completed.
  • Preventing long-term side effects of cancer treatments that change hormone levels, including estrogen-receptor blockers used in breast cancer treatment or androgen blockers used in prostate cancer treatment.

Depending on the type of heart disease and cancer treatment plan, our treatment options may include:

  • Heart medications to restore normal heart function, treat heart rhythm, and maintain blood pressure.
  • Lifestyle changes, such as regular exercise and a healthy diet.
  • Heart surgery if necessary. AHN offers various procedures depending on your heart condition or complication.
