The Allegheny General Hospital Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship is accredited by the ACGME, one-year in length from August 1 through July 31, and accepts two fellows per year. Under the direction of Sam Akhavan, MD, the fellows work with two residents on the sports medicine service to cover ten attending faculty members.
The goal of our Sports Medicine Service is to help injured athletes get back to their sport as quickly and safely as possible. We treat a variety of athletic injuries to the musculoskeletal system, with a special focus on shoulder, hip, elbow, and knee injuries. We are the official medical provider of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Pittsburgh Riverhounds, as well as the team physicians for USA Rugby (both 15s as well as the Olympic 7s Team), traveling nationally and internationally to cover events including the 2015 (England) and 2019 (Japan) Rugby World Cup. We also cover numerous area high schools.
Our fellowship-trained surgeons and primary care sports medicine specialists are experts in their respective fields. Using the latest non-operative and operative treatments, our doctors help patients regain function, so they can quickly return to competition or work. Our physicians are on the forefront of pioneering research studies that can lead to even more effective treatment options for sports injuries. Fellows will work with the following Attending Surgeons.
We also are committed to reducing the incidence and severity of sports injuries. Our clinical team is actively involved in educating athletes about injury prevention and recognition. By teaching athletes proper strength building, flexibility, conditioning, endurance, and training techniques, we believe we can help them minimize the risk of injury occurrence.
Our fellows come out of fellowship with large caseloads and expertise in the latest techniques for arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgery of the shoulder, knee, hip and elbow. In addition, there is ample exposure to shoulder reconstruction including shoulder replacement and complex reconstruction techniques for shoulder bone loss and instability.
In conjunction with the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, the orthopaedic sports medicine fellows are provided with a weekly sports conference in conjunction with the orthopaedic surgery residents and non-operative primary care sports medicine fellows. Other conferences included are weekly Grand Rounds, Morbidity & Mortality, Patient Safety Conference, and monthly Journal Club.
