Why Choose Us for Liver Cancer Treatment?

People come to Allegheny Health Network Cancer Institute because of our collaborative approach to liver cancer care. We work as a team, regularly discussing your treatment plan and making recommendations for next steps. You get quicker access to appropriate, effective treatment.

You meet with your liver cancer team within three days of diagnosis. Instead of different appointments with individual specialists, your treatment plan will be reviewed by a multidisciplinary team of specialists. This comprehensive approach means you get the most effective, personalized care available. You also have access to our many support services to help you feel your best during treatment.

Liver cancer: Our approach to care

A liver cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming. Often, liver cancer doesn’t cause any symptoms until it grows or spreads. We specialize in catching liver cancer at its earliest stages, when it’s most treatable. And even when the cancer is more advanced, we offer a variety of leading-edge treatments to stop it in its tracks.

We offer:

  • Targeted treatments: We use targeted therapies to treat the cancer with precision and help you recover faster. For example, we have pioneered the use of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). This precise, noninvasive technique delivers high doses of radiation directly to tumors with minimal damage to healthy tissue. This outpatient procedure offers a quick recovery time.
  • Liver transplants: We’re one of the few area hospitals with a liver transplant program. We’re part of the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) program. This network pairs patients with donors, meaning we can match you with a potential donor as quickly as possible. We perform a higher number of transplants for patients with liver cancer compared with other national programs. Even if the cancer is advanced, there’s hope.
  • Rigorous screening processes: Our team specializes in screening high-risk patients, such as those with cirrhosis or hepatitis. If you have one of these conditions, we monitor your health carefully, reducing the risk of cancer appearing. If you do develop cancer, we treat it quickly, before it grows.
  • A convenient, after hours cancer clinic: AHN opened the first After Hours Oncology Clinic in western Pennsylvania for patients with cancer. If you are experiencing side effects from treatment, call your physician’s office first, then visit our clinic, conveniently located at West Penn Hospital. We treat you quickly without exposing your compromised immune system to germs you may encounter in a traditional emergency room. Plus, our clinic is more affordable than a visit to the ER. And since our oncology specialists have access to your records, they may even be able to advise you over the phone and save you from making a trip.
