The General Surgery Residency Program is based at Allegheny General Hospital and is part of the Allegheny Health Network Surgery Institute. Our faculty members have diverse clinical and educational backgrounds, ensuring that residents have a rich educational experience and mentorship opportunities from faculty that can help them achieve their career goals.
The residency provides ample clinical experience, and residents can expect to average between 1100-1150 total cases logged during their 5 years of training. Each year, residents will have 12-14 rotations through 6 clinical training sites. As our main clinical site, Allegheny General Hospital will be the site of most rotations, with West Penn Hospital comprising the next largest volume of rotations. The other clinical sites are Forbes Hospital, Jefferson Hospital, Wexford Hospital and UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, allowing residents to gain exposure to a variety of clinical environments, including pediatric and rural community settings.
The residency also provides opportunity for research to help foster your academic interests. Residents get 3 hours of weekly protected education time, can choose to take clinical research time, and will participate in research with faculty during residency. Our residency program also covers most travel accommodations and fees associated with conference presentations.
Our goal is not only to produce board ready surgeons, but to foster surgeons that have had a breadth of experiences and are able to explore the diverse paths a career in surgery offers. Over the past 5 years, approximately 3/4 of our graduates have matched into fellowship programs. You can see the places and programs our alumni have matched into on our Residents page.
A fourth-year medical school rotation through our General Surgery Department or subspecialty elective is available on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, please reach out to the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education
