Functional and Motility Disorders

Functional gastrointestinal and motility disorders are the most common kinds of GI disorders. Some common GI disorders include irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), functional dyspepsia, gastroparesis, and chronic constipation. Approximately 25 million Americans suffer from functional GI disorders. 50-80% of people with symptoms do not consult a physician. At the Allegheny Health Network (AHN) Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, we offer functional and motility disorder support and guidance to help you handle the challenges you face.

Symptoms of functional and motility disorders

Patients with functional and motility disorders may suffer from:

  • Pain and discomfort in the abdomen
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Belching and bloating
  • Globus (sensation of a lump or tightness in the throat)
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea

Comprehensive care for functional and motility disorders

We offer comprehensive functional and motility disorder diagnosis and treatment services that are personalized to your needs. You’ll benefit from our:

  • Experience: Our care team includes physicians who specialize in diagnosing and treating irritable bowel syndrome. Their expertise allows them to give you a precise diagnosis quickly.
  • Team mindset: Our gastroenterologists, nutrition specialists, and clinical psychologists collaborate to talk through the specifics of every patient’s case, including yours, in a multidisciplinary fashion. This approach helps us develop treatment plans personalized to your needs.

Treating functional and motility disorders

Our division is able to provide specialized therapy for function and motility disorders. For instance, we can prescribe Domperidone to treat gastroparesis through a special program with the FDA. If you have gastroparesis, you may also be referred for surgical evaluation in certain situations.

  • Surgical options include: Pyloroplasty or gastric pacer implantation
  • Support services: Functional and motility disorders may impact your ability to maintain your daily work and social activities. As part of your treatment we will help you learn to cope with stress, anxiety, depression, and pain. Our psychologist also offers a deep understanding of the challenges these disorders can present.
