PGY1 pharmacy residency program – Acute care-based practice setting

History and purpose

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program in the Acute care-based practice setting was first accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) in 2002 and most recently reaccredited in 2022. The program provides comprehensive training in all aspects of institutional practice with an emphasis on the delivery of pharmaceutical care and clinical services. 

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at Saint Vincent Hospital builds upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

Rotations

The 12-month postgraduate training experience is composed of a variety of required and elective rotations, as follows:

  • Orientation (2 weeks)
  • Cardiology (1 month)
  • Consultative Services (1 month and Longitudinal)
  • Critical Care (1 month)
  • Emergency Medicine (1month)
  • Infectious Diseases (1 month)
  • Internal Medicine (1 month)
  • Pediatrics/Neonatology (1 month)
  • Practice Management (Longitudinal)
  • Inpatient Pharmacy Staffing (1 month and Longitudinal)
  • Advanced Staffing and Medication Safety (1 month)
  • Residency Project (Longitudinal)
  • Post ICU Care Syndrome (PICS) Clinic (Longitudinal)
  • Teaching and Precepting (Longitudinal) 

The specific program for each resident varies based upon the resident’s goals, interests, and previous experience. However, all residents are required to complete the above core rotations. The required rotations above can be repeated and tailored to resident interests as an elective, or the resident may select from elective rotations below.

Elective rotation options - Two 1-month rotations

  • Pain/Palliative Care
  • Teaching/Academia
  • Administration
  • Transitions of Care - Heart Failure/Acute MI
  • Care Partner Clinic
  • Primary Care/Comprehensive Medication Review
  • Outpatient Oncology
  • Up to one required rotation may be repeated as an elective, if desired

PGY1 pharmacy residency program – Ambulatory-based practice setting

History and purpose

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency program in the Ambulatory Care-based Practice Setting was established in 2021 and was first accredited by the American Society of Health-system Pharmacists in 2022. The program provides an environment for comprehensive education and training in drug therapy and disease state management for patients in a collaborative setting. The program includes a variety of ambulatory and inpatient rotations with an emphasis on transitions of care.

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at Saint Vincent Hospital builds upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives.
