Research

Opportunities

  • Surgery residents are required to do research with a faculty mentor throughout the course of their residency and to present their work on Resident Research Day each spring.
  • In addition to required research, residents may choose to take 1-3 years of research time after their  PGY-2 or PGY-3 year. Residents can choose basic or clinical research internally or through another institution and can conduct basic or clinical
  • Residents have the opportunity to partake in nationally conducted cancer research protocols at our hospitals, including those of the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP), whose office is located near Allegheny General Hospital.
  • A variety of laboratory research projects/opportunities are available through the Allegheny Health Network Research Institute.

Conferences

  • In order to support resident research efforts, we support residents presenting at local, regional, and national conferences. Residents can receive funds to present each piece of research as a poster or podium presentation at a conference.
  • Residents also receive funds to attend a conference during their PGY-4 or PGY-5 year as an attendee. This can be to attend a conference of educational interest, or for career and fellowship networking.

Research Resources

  • Our Health Sciences Library contains more than 11,000 volumes, maintains subscriptions to 166 journals, and offers all major indices and citation retrieval services on-site to support clinical, educational, and research activities of residents and medical staff members. It is supervised by a full-time medical librarian who provides individualized teaching and assistance to residents and it offers online bibliographic services and individualized literature searches.

To aid in research, we have a research associate who is dedicated to facilitating General Surgery Residency research.
