Geriatric Primary Care

At AHN, geriatric medicine experts specialize in treating older adults as they age and their health needs change, so they can maintain a high quality of life.

What is geriatric medicine?

As our bodies age, our health care needs change. Sometimes medications or diseases affect seniors differently than younger adults. A geriatric physician, or geriatrician, helps senior patients and their families manage complicated health issues caused by aging.

Geriatricians have a background in either family medicine or internal medicine and are board-certified in geriatric medicine, which means they complete additional training for treating seniors.

When should you see a geriatric doctor?

Generally, you should consider seeing a geriatrician for either primary care or a specialty visit if you’re 65 and older and you:

  • Have issues with frailty or physical limitations.
  • Have multiple conditions that require complex medication and treatment.
  • Can no longer get adequate support from your current caregivers.

Conditions a geriatrician can help you manage

A geriatrician helps manage life-limiting conditions that are directly associated with aging, including:

Many seniors have more than one illness and take several medications. Geriatricians manage complex health conditions and courses of treatment. They also help to educate and support patients and their caregivers.

Our geriatrics primary care program provides medical care to seniors and older people experiencing life-limiting illnesses across all settings. These services include inpatient, outpatient, and home-based geriatric care options as well as hospice support services.
