Arthroscopy

If joint pain is getting in the way of doing what you love, there’s hope. Nationally recognized experts at Allegheny Health Network (AHN) use surgical procedures, such as arthroscopy, to stop the pain where it starts.

We have deep experience in orthopaedic procedures, including care for wrists, ankles, knees, and hips. We help you get much-needed relief so you can get back to your favorite activities.

What is arthroscopy?

Arthroscopy is a technique for examining and treating problems inside a joint. We use a small incision for this minimally invasive procedure.

A miniature camera and sophisticated instruments make it possible to perform complex repair procedures with a delicate touch. You’ll feel less discomfort after surgery and experience a quicker recovery compared to surgery using traditional techniques.

Expert joint repair at AHN: Why choose us?

AHN is home to some of the country’s experts in orthopaedic surgery, giving you access to a level of care that’s not widely available. Most of our doctors completed fellowships, meaning they have additional training in areas such as hand surgery. Our expertise helps you achieve the best possible results. Arthroscopy is part of our comprehensive approach to care. As you recover, we offer physical therapy to help you make a safe transition back to your everyday activities. We also offer sports performance services, including strength training, to prevent the pain from coming back. Read more about physical therapy and sports performance services.

Arthroscopy: What to expect

If you are considering arthroscopy, here’s what to expect:

  • Evaluation: We start with a physical examination and imaging tests to determine whether the pain is severe enough for arthroscopy. Read more about evaluation and orthopaedic diagnosis.
  • Nonsurgical treatments: We develop a personalized care plan considering the available treatment options. We may recommend nonsurgical treatments such as medications, physical therapy, and injections. Find out more about orthopaedic and sports injury treatments.
  • Arthroscopy: If other treatments fail to bring relief, we move ahead with arthroscopy. We use a high-definition camera to examine the fine details of your joint. Your procedure may include removing worn-out cartilage or bone fragments. We may also repair tears in the connective tissue (ligaments).
  • Quick recovery: In most cases, you can expect to go home the same day. In the weeks following surgery, we help you ease back into daily activities with physical therapy using the best available equipment.
