The Inclusion Health Track was formed in 2016 under the direction of internationally-recognized clinician educators within the AHN Center for Inclusion Health (CIH), a division of the Medicine Institute. This track’s mission is to offer you a unique opportunity to learn, from a multidisciplinary team, about how to overcome the forces that traditionally work to exclude people from health care. When you are enrolled in this innovative track, you will have the opportunity for in-depth, longitudinal training experiences in the areas of:
- Social Medicine
- Health Care to Underserved Populations
- Health Disparities
- Social Determinants of Health
- Population Health
You will sharpen your clinical and non-clinical skills essential to caring for vulnerable patient populations through a combination of specialized didactic, experiential, and research learning approaches.
In the Inclusion Health track you will:
- Experience and learn to give lectures and skills-based training on core Inclusion Health topics, including Social Determinants of Health, Harm Reduction, Motivational Interviewing, Substance Use Screening and Treatment, Poverty Medicine, Street Medicine, Population Health Research, and many others
- Have your primary care continuity clinic at AGH Internal Medicine Clinic, located in the North Side—one of Pittsburgh’s most impoverished and medically underserved neighborhoods.
- Rotate through and establish continuity in various CIH sponsored sites of care. See a sample rotation schedule. Some clinical sites include:
- Street outreach to unsheltered homeless individuals
- Integrated HIV primary care clinic
- Substance use disorders clinic and inpatient consult service
- Federally Qualified Health Centers
- Transgender health clinics
- Post-incarceration clinic
- Rotate through the Addiction Medicine Consult Service at AHN hospitals.
- Participate in other non-clinical CIH activities, including “hot-spotting” programs, health systems-level advocacy, and program/curriculum development.
- Participate in a monthly CIH Journal club.
- Have the opportunity to build novel and sustainable Inclusion Health programs across the AHN Health System.
- Some previous examples of programs we’ve launched are a Community Health Worker program and a Food Box program.
- Perform scholarly activity in the areas of Inclusion Health.
- Be mentored by experienced Inclusion Health faculty and under the direction of Patrick Perri, MD and Divya Venkat, MD.
- Learn from amazing fellow CIH Track residents who are all doing innovative work in Inclusion Health.
If your career interests are focused on other areas of Internal Medicine but you would like to learn more about Inclusion Health, CIH also offers 1-week electives that you can take anytime during your training.
We accept up to three Inclusion Health Track residents each year. If you are interested in pursuing the Inclusion Health Track, apply directly to the AHN Internal Medicine Categorical Program. When you are granted an interview, please let the program coordinator know about your interest in this track so we can arrange for you to meet with Inclusion Health faculty.
Please note: this track does not have its own NRMP number; interested residents will be selected from the categorical interns matched into the AHN Internal Residency Program.
